“People think mental health issues can be cured by yoga, meditation, or holidays. While these can help, they are not cures for serious conditions that require medical treatment. The main challenge is overcoming stigma: if physical pain demands medical attention, so should mental pain. Mental health requires acceptance, understanding that the brain, like any organ, can have issues.“

How to remove stigma surrounding mental illness
The Hugging Club of India (HCI) comes to town this weekend with a powerful session to address mental health and the stigma that surrounds it. An initiative by Mumbai-based advertising professional Umang Sheth, the club’s sessions provide a platform to help one express their feelings without the fear of being judged. The club was launched in Mumbai in October 2017 when one of Umang’s friends in Hyderabad committed suicide. “He was 40 and couldn’t open up about his depression and loneliness,” recalls Umang, adding he could understand the stigma surrounding the issue since he faces a similar situation with his parents.

In six months, hugging club helps five people, stops one from committing suicide

Started by Umang Sheth, co-founder of Gay Bombay, this club is for gays and gay-friendly people, facing problems in life, especially those who are coming out.

A hugging club in the past six months has helped five people by taking them to psychiatrists or counsellors and has even stopped a person from committing suicide. Started by Umang Sheth, co-founder of Gay Bombay, this club is for gays and gay-friendly people, facing problems in life, especially those who are coming out. The club has planned a workshop in May with a Gay-friendly counsellor to help several others.
